The Syracuse University Marching Band had its first rehearsal on February 4th of 1901 under the direction of Hamilton E. Cogswell. Our fight song, "Down the Field," was first performed in 1913. In 1966, women were first allowed to march in the band, and in 1980 Dr. Robert Spradling became the director of bands at Syracuse University.
Starting in 1981, Dr. Spradling suggested starting chapters of Tau Beta Sigma and Kappa Kappa Psi at Syracuse University. Arrangements were made for brothers and sisters from West Virginia University to come speak to students at Syracuse. In the end, WVU's Delta Beta Chapter of Tau Beta Sigma became Eta Alpha's big sister chapter. On December 4th, 1982 Eta Alpha was founded!
Our founding sisters were Allison Mau, Heidi Neuffer, Gwen Seazholtz, Debra Calef, Lillian Turco, Lynda Powell, and Jennifer Beck.
